Aboriginal Conference In Newcastle

The work of a local organisation in preserving indigenous languages will be discussed at a public hearing in Newcastle today.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs has been holding hearings around the country.

Committee chair and Federal MP Shayne Neuman says indigenous communities can only benefit from preserving their languages and the Hunter is leading the way.

“The work that is being done at the local aboriginal language and technology centre is at the forefront of developing some support for language preservation and reclamation through technology,” he said.

“So I’m really excited about this visit.

“There’ll be evidence given by local indigenous people.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what’s happening in the Hunter region, what’s happening in respect to language maintenance, revitalisation and training.”
