The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, said Friday that command-level officers in the Bolivian military and police will be required to learn one of the Andean nation’s indigenous languages in order to improve their service to the people.
The president stressed that the native-language courses must be obligatory and announced that his government will establish how much time will be given to those who “speak no Aymara, Quechua or Guarani” to learn one of those languages, “including commanders of the police and the armed forces.”
If a police commander speaks any of those languages, it will help lower tensions in any conflict involving groups of Indians, the leftist head of state said.
Morales, an Aymara, is the first indigenous president of Indian-majority Bolivia.
