Carramar Named For Its Claim To Fame

CARRAMAR’S fame for its beautiful trees and creek frontage goes back thousands of years.

Carramar is the Aboriginal word for “shade of trees” and the suburb joins hundreds of places across Sydney that take their name from Aboriginal language.

From Barrenjoey to Bundeena and Warragamba, Aboriginal words have become part of our collective language and sense of place.

These words are the historical evidence of Aboriginal settlement and life in the Sydney area.

First settlers possibly asked local tribes what they called a place, but some of those names have lost the phonetic sound and have become derivations.

Other Aboriginal names include Cabarita (“by the water”), Chullora (“flour”), Kogarah (“place of reeds or rushes”), Leumeah (“here I rest”) and Milperra (“gathering of people”).
