Members of NSLA’s Indigenous project group met with representatives of First Languages Australia this week at the State Library of Victoria. Delegates discussed current and future projects to identify archival Indigenous language material in NSLA library collections, and make it accessible to communities. Much of this material, such as vocabulary lists recorded by missionaries, is hidden in larger collections and not readily found in catalogue listings. Other library initiatives are assisting communities in creating and managing their own language materials.
A list of projects underway in NSLA libraries relating to Indigenous languages will be compiled and shared on our website by July.
The Indigenous group continued today with their annual face-to-face meeting. Members shared information about programs and initiatives in their libraries and discussed the objectives of the recent national position statement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander library services and collections. Detailed project planning was undertaken for the group’s major project, Right Wrongs,an online exhibition commemorating the 1967 Referendum to be launched in 2017.
