Funding Boost to Preserve Local Indigenous Languages

COWPER MP Luke Hartsuyker welcomed the announcement of $470,000 in federal funding for the Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-operative at Nambucca Heads to preserve local indigenous languages.

Minister for the Arts Senator George Brandis made the announcement from the Cape York Peninsula where he has been visiting with Mr Hartsuyker and other ministers as part of the Prime Minister’s annual visit to remote indigenous communities.

Senator Brandis announced a total of $11.9m for 41 different organisations through the Indigenous Languages and Arts Program to support work to revive and maintain languages.

“Australia’s indigenous languages are ancient and culturally valuable. I am pleased to see this investment in preserving and promoting these languages for future generations,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“The funding will be used to support language revival and maintenance activities on various indigenous languages within the MNC region.”
