Guest Lecture – Dharug and Lower Hawkesbury Historical Society

Dharug & Lower Hawkesbury Historical Society (DLHHS) is delighted to announce a very special lecture at their premises at the historic Chapel at Gunderman on Saturday 30 July 2011.

Guest speakers will be Keith Vincent Smith, biographer of Bungaree, and language historian Jeremy Steele, whose particular study has been the distribution of languages in the greater Sydney area.

Both speakers will focus particularly on the Broken Bay, Brisbane Water and Lower Hawkesbury Aboriginal people and their language.

Historian, biographer and curator Keith Vincent Smith will talk about Indigenous seafarers from Broken Bay and their extraordinary voyages in English sailing ships known in the local language as ‘Mari Nawi’.

Language historian Jeremy Steele will talk about his database of Indigenous languages, concentrating on important Brisbane Water vocabularies. We will take away some knowledge of Aboriginal grammar and learn how to pronounce five words.

Location Details
The talk will be held in the State Heritage listed sandstone Wesleyan Chapel, which has been recently restored, at 6445 Wisemans Ferry Road, Gunderman. The Chapel, adjacent to “The Missions”, is signposted on the Hawkesbury River side at road level. It is between historic Mill Creek Bridge and Muskoka horse stud at Gunderman and is approximately 8 kilometres from Wisemans Ferry and 18 kilometres from Spencer.
