Efforts are underway in Kempsey and Purfleet to keep Aboriginal students in school.
The Macleay Valley Aboriginal Education Consultive Committee says a high proportion of children are not performing as well as they could.
President Fred Kelly says too many children are suspended for things like using mobile phones or talking in class.
He says one way to keep them in school might be to improve access to indigenous studies.
“It’s actually negotiating with the schools about having a lot of Aboriginal electives in the curriculum.
“Sometime next year we’ll be having the Dunghutti Language Program introduced into a lot of the schools.
“We find that a lot of the schools don’t have a very comprehensive Aboriginal Studies Program.
“That needs to change.
“That’s clearly a role for the ACG to come up with some resource people that are able to go into the schools and deliver a really comprehensive program of Aboriginal Studies,” he said.
