Kimberley Language Resource Centre (KLRC)

The KLRC is a regional organisation. It was the first language centre to be established in Australia, in 1984. It is governed by an Executive Committee representative of the remaining 28 Kimberley language groups.
 
The goals of the KLRC into 2008 are:
·         promoting oral language transmission e.g. Language Nests, immersion programs
·         skills training/capacity building of Aboriginal people to manage their own language activities
·         a strong role for Aboriginal people and communities in decision making about languages
·         raising awareness in the Aboriginal community about the reasons for language loss to assist with decision making
·         supporting Aboriginal language groups to account for dialects/varieties and the diversity of their languages to assist with decision making
·         provide information about language learning theory to communities to assist in their decision making
·         accessible grammatical resources and assisted access to existing resources
·         promote better understanding in the education system about the need to account for lingusitic and cultural differences in learning
·         working with government departments on communication strategies
·         promoting audiovisual documentation and audiovisual teaching/learning materials development as a means of Aboriginal management of language and knowledge and how it is passed on
·         raising awareness of Intellectual Property issues amongst the Aboriginal community
