New Name For Port Stephens Island

A proposal is currently before the Geographical Names Board to name a currently un-named small island at Port Stephens.

The islet is located in Fishermans Passage between Broughton Island and Little Broughton Island.

The small island is part of study of seabirds and it needs a name to formally identify it in the survey, because initial investigations reveal at least two seabirds breed on the islet.

Deputy Chair of the Geographical Names Board Paul Harconde says naming is open for public comment.

“And the name that’s being proposed is Gandja-baa,” he said.

“And that comes from the local Warrimay language which means nesting place for birds.”

“So we’re calling for submissions from the public to for either support or comments on the appropriateness and support for naming this currently unnamed islet.”
