The trial for the ABC’s translated bulletin service in the Northern Territory was almost four years ago.
With a healthy percentage of the Northern Territory’s population being Aboriginal, for whom English might be s a second, third or even fourth language, the ABC recognised the need for this section of the audience to access important news and information.
Yolngu Matha is spoken throughout north east Arnhem Land, and was the first language trialled for the project.
The official service was launched in 2014.
Now, in 2016, the translated bulletin service offers two more languages, Kriol which originated east of Katherine in the Roper River region during the 1900’s, and Warlpiri, spoken throughout the Tanami Desert, which includes Lajamanu, Yuendemu, Nyirrpi and Willowra.
