A GOSPEL hymn used to help preserve Aboriginal language is among the repertoire of carols Thornbury Primary School will perform at Carols in All Nations.
The grades five and six string band and choir are among artists performing at the free, family-friendly Christmas celebration at All Nations Park in Northcote on Saturday night.
Violinist and singer Portia, 12, said she was especially looking forward to singing Ngarra Burra Ferra Ngarraburra Serra, a song from the Yorta Yorta tribe made famous in the recent Australian hit movie The Sapphires.
The grade six student said singing the song was important for herself and other students, particularly after hearing many Aboriginal people were forbidden from speaking their own language when they were moved on to mission stations and reserves between the late 1800s and 1960s.
“They weren’t allowed to speak their Yorta Yorta language but they were allowed to sing gospel songs and this was how they kept their language alive,” Portia said.
Grade five student Abby, 11, said the Australian version of Deck the Halls was sure to also be a crowd favourite.
This year’s Carols in All Nations will be hosted by comedian Nelly Thomas and feature music from ARCapella with Darebin City Brass, The Red Brigade, Lipstick and Spurs, Thormbury High School Stage Band, Gruppo Culturale Italiano, Uke 4 Kids Family Orchestra and High St Bells.
There will also be a Mini Made ‘n Thornbury Market, sausage sizzle, cake stall and second-hand book sale.
