The language centre has been busy rebuilding and recovering from the devastating fire that gutted part of the new building last year.
Repairs are now complete. “We encourage people to visit and enjoy cultural performances, language activities and displays,” Wangka Maya manager Nadine Hicks said.
“Rebuilding after the fire has been a slow process and we are finally ready to welcome Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people into the centre.
We hope everyone will enjoy the performances and displays and will learn something new about the rich Aboriginal culture which surrounds us in the Pilbara.”
The open day will also feature free children’s activities including a bouncy castle, face painting and temporary tattoos.
A free lunch will be provided including bush tucker favourites kangaroo stew and damper.
Visitors are invited to try their hand at making their own damper. Performances will include traditional dancing, music and story-telling.
Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre’s Open Day will be held at the centre on the corner of Hamilton and Throssell Roads, South Hedland this Saturday.
