I had a sneak peak this week at what’s to come from the Yugambeh Museum next year.
The museum is a language and heritage research centre.
Making a number of announcements at Somerset College, Museum Director Rory O’Connor launched Yugambeh Mobo, an Aboriginal language and culture festival to be held on June 1 2014.
The festival will be held at the Mudgeeraba school and play host to a number of workshops and activities as well as showcasing dance bush tucker and music.
Some of that music to feature might be part of the newly established Yugambeh Youth Choir and the Yugambeh Reconciliation Orchestra.
ARIA winner and Aboriginal composer William Barton will become the ambassador in these initiatives to work with Aboriginal communities of south east Queensland.
It certainly sounds like it will be a great time leading into the National NAIDOC Awards which are to be held on the Gold Coast next July.
But Rory also hopes these initiatives will become a pool of talent and resources for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games to tap into.
